I’m sure many you have seen the photos and video’s of the recent internet take-over. Three times world champion Mick Fanning’s encounter with a Great white shark during the finals of the J-bay pro.
There are many accounts of the event portraying different angles; from ‘vicious near death attack’ to ‘spooked Great White struggles to escape surfers leash’. All stories aside, we are just glad that every one made it out the water safely.
J-bay this year was an interesting event, with many of the favourites to win going out early. Julian Wilson and Mick Fanning in our eyes are not only excellent surfers, but also fantastic ambassadors of the sport.
The Ocean is home to sharks, as surfers, its something we have to accept every we time we go in the water but something that is always pushed to the back of your thoughts, out of site out of mind.
Our interpretation is with the mid day sun and water craft all over the scene, it is most likely to be a fluke event not an attack. The shark didn’t strike from underneath, instead it thrashed knocking Mick off his board. All of that a side, the fact that this was in the final heat of a world championship event and was being being viewed not only to a live audience but also broadcasted to people all over the world is incredible. I think we are all just humbled that every one, shark included, came away unharmed.
The WSL handed the incident excellently, the water safety team burst into action as was evident from the cameras. Julian Wilson’s actions where humbling to see, as he saw the shark, he sprint paddled towards his countryman and friend. What an inspiration!
Since the incident, there has been a huge response from the wider surf community. All in all, i think this moment will be remembered and spoken about for a long time and not only in surfing history! For now though, we are just happy every one is safe and we look forward to see the boys back in the water and charging hard for the rest of the tour.
P.S if your reading this WSL, I’ve heard the rumours, please don’t take J-bay off the tour!
